(repeat) Georgie and Barbara, helping the economy. Deficit spending, all in the name of liberty. Keeping up with the Joneovich’s Keeping up with the Joneovich’s Keeping up, keeping up, with the sons-o-bitches When will it end, End my friend, We gotta have ‘em ‘cause they’ve got have him ‘cuz, We gotta have ‘em ‘cause they’ve got have him ‘cuz

Tom Dooley 03:21
Hang your head Tom Dooley Hang your head and cry Killed little Laurie Foster and you know you’re bound to die Left her by the roadside where you begged to be excused. Left her by the roadside where you hid her clothes and shoes Hang your head Tom Dooley Hang your head and cry Killed little Laurie Foster and you know you’re bound to die You took her on the hillside for to make her your wife. You took her on the hillside and there you took her life. You dug the grave four feet long and you dug it three feet deep. Rolled that cold clay over her and you tromped it with your feet. Hang your head Tom Dooley, Hang your head and cry. Killed little Laurie Foster and you know you’re bound to die Trouble oh it’s trouble rolling over my breast. As long as I’m a living boys, they just won’t let me rest. I know they’re gonna hang me, tomorrow I’ll be dead. Though I never even harmed a hair on poor little Laurie’s head. Hang your head Tom Dooley, Hang your head and cry. Killed little Laurie Foster and you know you’re bound to die In this world and one more then reckon where I’ll be? If it wasn’t for Sheriff Grayson I’d be in Tennessee. At this time tomorrow boys, where do you reckon I’ll be? Way down yonder in the holler, hanging on a wide oak tree. Hang your head Tom Dooley, Hang your head and cry. Killed little Laurie Foster and you know you’re bound to die Take down my old violin and play it all you please, For at this time tomorrow boys it will be no use to me. Hang your head Tom Dooley, Hang your head and cry. Killed little Laurie Foster and you know you’re bound to die (REPEAT CHORUS)

Mammals 02:25
We are mammals wild and wooly, watch us as we climb. We’re gonna control our world, hey just give us time. We are mammals cute and furry, take us as we are. We’ll invent Fruit Loops, and Chevrolets. We’re gonna learn to harness some cosmic rays. We are mammals cute and furry, take us as we are. We’re gonna build tall buildings, travel to the stars. We are mammals sweet and fluffy, watch us as we grow. We’ll become Einsteins and Danny Kays Some us are gonna build Rome in a day. “Hey, I’m evolving…” “I lost my tail!” “I’m walking on my hind legs!” “I’m a mammal.” We’ll inherit the Earth hope we don’t blow it up someday. We are mammals sweet and fluffy, watch us as we grow. We don’t seem like much now, some day we’re gonna run the show. We are mammals wild and wooly, watch us as we roam. We’re gonna build cities, parks, and zoos. One of us is gonna kill six million Jews. “Hey, I picked up a tool…” “I can build a fire!” “I invented a wheel!” “I’m an Agriculturalist.” We will inherit the Earth hope we don’t blow it up someday. We are mammals sweet and fluffy, watch us as we grow. We don’t seem like much now, some day we’re gonna run the show. We are mammals wild and wooly, watch us as we roam. We’re gonna build cities, parks, and zoos. One of us is gonna kill six million Jews.

Hail the day, it’s safe to say we’re on our way, To that place we’ve been before, let it comfort me. Down that lonesome road, I know we’ve passed it twice before Let the sweet tree’s shade comfort me. Soft embrace, sunlight on your face, moonlight’s gonna chase, gonna chase our fears away Let the sweet tree’s shade comfort me. October drive, feel so alive. We can leave the bad behind, leave the bad behind. No doubts no rush, leave the crush, Let the sweet tree’s shade shelter me. Take my hand, Trouble falls like sand, Now I know I can, now I know I live in harmony ‘Cause the sweet tree’s shade comforts me. Hail the day, it’s safe to say we’re on our way, To that place we’ve been before. Let it comfort me. Let it comfort me. Let it comfort me.

I’ll never be, my friend, the same again. The shade your brush gave to me, Only your brush can see. I’ll never meet again, myself, before you were a friend. The shade your touch gave to him, Never see him again. You are a glass, they see inside, who will they become? Become a door they walk on through, You walk them on through. You are away, my friend, but you’re here too. I speak a word you might say, and you’re here too. The shade your brush gave to me, Only your brush can see. You are a part, my friend, a part of me. I’ll never be the same, Now that you’ve seen me. You are a glass, they see inside, who will they become? Become a door they walk on through, You walk them on through.

Well a steak is but a steak and a knife is but a knife, But if you’re not careful you will end up with a wife. She’ll care for you and feed you and give you a home, But twenty years later, you’ll be looking for a lawyer ‘Cause a steak is but a steak and knife is but a knife. Well a steak is but a steak and a knife is but a knife, But if you’re not careful you will screw up your life. You’ll make some mistakes that you’ll later regret, And twenty years later, you’ll be looking for a lawyer ‘Cause a steak is but a steak and knife is but a knife. Well a fish is but a fish and your thing is everything, But if you’re not careful you’ll be buying her a ring. Sending invitations, looking real cute, But twenty years later you’ll be filing a suit ‘Cause a steak is but a steak and knife is but a knife. “Well, ladies and gentlemen, a steak is just a steak and a knife is but a knife, But if you’re not careful you will end up with a wife. Now she may care for you she may feed you she may give you a home, But twenty years later, you will be looking for a lawyer, ‘Cause a steak is just a steak and knife, it’s only a knife. Let’s don’t fool ourselves” Well a steak is but a steak and a knife is but a knife, But if you’re not careful you will screw up your life. You’ll make some mistakes that you’ll later regret, And twenty years later, you’ll be looking for a lawyer ‘Cause a steak is but a steak and knife is but a knife. … and knife is but a knife. … and knife is but a knife. … and knife is but a knife.

Be Alive 02:53
Be alive, be aware that you are alive, When the fruit falls uneaten. Be yourself, be aware that you are yourself, When the house is empty and nobody’s there. Nobody’s there. Be willing, be willing to show yourself, When the race reminds you how small you are. Be one, be one person at a time. As an island illustrates. Illustrates. (REPEAT)

I got the Ding Dong Blues sadder than a dentist drill I got the Ding Dong Blues ate a keg of Whip-n-Chill I look like Audrey Hepburn searching for a diet pill I got the Ding Dong Blues dreaming about Miami Beach I got the Ding Dong Blues H-bombs 49 cents each I feel like Mr. Rogers drinking lots of Tab and bleach. Well I went to ancient Rome, I found nobody home, Some Cub Scouts playing Scrabble stole my metronome Oh baby, my hairstyles obsolete. Madonna bought my building, she put my whirlpool on the street. I got the Ding Dong Blues just not having any fun I got the Ding Dong Blues headed for oblivion Lying on the sofa, dreaming about the Flying Nun. I got the Ding Dong Blues head’s about to bifurcate I got the Ding Dong Blues don’t know what it was I ate Might have been the sushi that caused to me to hallucinate. One and one are four Six and four are nine My favorite orthodontist skipped to Lichtenstein Oh baby, I’m gloomy as Pagliachi The only thing that’ll save me is two weeks with Liberache I don’t know what to do ‘Cause I got loquats in my shoe A fortune cookie told me that I used the wrong shampoo Oh baby, I’m down on my knees If things don’t get much better, I’m gonna send out for chinese.

about

In many ways, DOGS FOR HIRE, The New Agriculturalists fifth and final album is their most fully realized musical expression. By this point, Rusch was finger-picking the guitar with utter confidence, Vanderburg’s harmonica playing had evolved beyond it’s humble Dylanesque warblings, and their blended vocal harmonies soar to places they only aspired to before.

Recording on a simple Tascam 4-Track cassette recorder in assorted living rooms, live-surfaced bathrooms, and hallways in Pasadena and Echo Park, the boys were liberated by the flexibility of the portable studio while still maintaining the control of a multi-track experience. The song-writing and performances also have an easy, celebratory quality of two 25 year old guys comfortable with what they were doing now and with absolutely nothing to prove anymore.

Not long after the DOGS FOR HIRE release on New Years Day 1989, Rusch moved permanently to Northern California, eventually forming the duo HIP EPONYMOUS (later Blues'd & Confused), with long-time collaborator, John Relph. Vanderburg would guest accompany them at a few shows in the Bay Area in the early and mid 90’s, but the New Agriculturalists never really recorded or performed again. Vanderburg formed his band BEAVER USA after moving to Seattle in 1998. In 2012, he would reunite with New Ag, James Mak, and his other Dallas bandmates in MACHO HAIKU and contribute to their album, SLOPPY FIRSTS, released in 2019.
